This a little series I’m calling “Funny Story of the Day,” When I talk to my friends and tell them these stories, they think my life is a little odd, and that’s good, because it IS odd.
This story just happened today! We’re trying to get some music gear that we stored two years ago here to the Dominican Republic where we live. When we moved into an RV, we stored in my aunt’s basement a little bit of stuff that we wanted to keep but we couldn’t bring with us. We have a drum set, a bunch of hand percussion drums along with other equipment and musical instruments. Now that we live in the Dominican Republic, we want as much of that as possible to make its way down here.
When we have friends that come on vacation, they often bring us things to reduce shipping costs. This week we have a friend named McKenna coming down for vacation. She’s arriving on Sunday, it’s now Wednesday and we’re trying to get her that gear from my Auntie Pam’s house. I tried to coordinate for her to go over there, but she was scheduled to work a lot before she comes down for vacation.
I FaceTimed with my aunt to tell her what I wanted, and my poor aunt had to dig through pieces of metal drum set gear to find a specific cymbal, and then also had to carry our guitar up with her from the basement. Then my aunt would drive to Mckenna’s place of employment to drop it off at the hotel front desk where she works. Because that’s normal right? Everyone gets a cymbal, boom arm mount and a guitar dropped off to them at work…
After we figured out the logistics, I sent McKenna Auntie Pam’s contact info, and sent Auntie Pam her contact. I write McKenna and say, “Hey, McKenna, we got all the stuff. Thanks.” She responded “sounds good.”
A little while later I get a strange text. “Oh my God.”
I texted,”what?”
She says “ I just got a text and it said, ‘Hey, McKenna, this is Auntie Pam’, and I’m in therapy right now. And actually, I had an Auntie Pam that died 15 years ago, so I was shocked that Auntie Pam was texting me while I’m in my therapy session.”
Obviously it’s my Auntie Pam, not her Auntie Pam but this led to a funny and odd moment nonetheless. Auntie Pam will soon be on her way with the gear and then this weekend she’s gonna bring it down to the Dominican Republic with us, and we’ll be able to deck out our little kiddie drum set for our daughter and jam together with the acoustic guitar she is bringing down that’s ours too. I didn’t expect to be using necromancy as a tool in the pursuit of getting my music gear into the foreign country where I live. I guess you do whatever it takes! Ha!
